My Experience [Benefits of Tea Rinsing]
Annoyed but not defeated, I researched coffee and tea rinsing a little more. I quickly took notice that many concluded black coffee and black tea provided a strengthening effect to the hair. For some, this is cool. However, for those of us with protein sensitive, high maintenance hair, it is not so cool. I went in research mode and made a list of teas deemed moisturizing with high mucilage content to provide slip to the hair. Of the teas mentioned, slippery elm and marshmallow root received the most consistently positive reviews.
I tried slippery elm and it holds up to its name! My hair was moisturized, felt awesome and I even noticed reduced shedding. I kept with slippery elm for months before giving marshmallow root a try. To my surprise, marshmallow root had better slip than slippery elm. Seeing how both of these were a hair hit, I created a concoction with using slippery elm and marshmallow root that I used each wash day. My hair became perfectly soft and shedding reduced significantly.
