When you first start your hair journey, understanding carrier oils, essential oils and figuring out the best oils for natural hair can be a bit of a challenge. Hopefully this article will remove some of the guesswork as it provides an overview of various oils and the benefits associated with each.
Carrier oils are mild oils that are derived from the fatty portions of plants. Their mild properties allow them to be applied directly to your scalp and skin without irritation. Carrier oils are used as the base for more potent oils known to cause irritation when applied directly. Examples of carrier oils are grapeseed, avocado, olive, castor and coconut oil.
Essential oils are derived from plants and are highly concentrated. They typically possess the aroma and characteristics of the plant in which they are derived. Examples of essentials oils are peppermint, tea tree, lavender and eucalyptus oil. These oils are very aromatic and very potent. Essentials oils should be mixed with a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation.

— My Picks for the BEST Oils for Natural Hair —
My favorite carrier oils are avocado, castor, olive, wheat germ and coconut oil.
Avocado oil deeply penetrates the hair which makes it an excellent hair sealant.
Castor oil absorbs into the skin easily based on its molecular weight. Therefore, it is the best oil for restoring thinning hair when consistently applied to the problem area. It can be a little too thick to seal your hair but it serves as a great scalp massage oil with its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
Olive oil is a humectant and can attract moisture, thereby making it an excellent pre-shampoo treatment. You can even add 1 tablespoon to your deep conditioner to boost moisture and performance.
Coconut oil has been studied extensively and is proven to penetrate the hair strand, making it a great pre-shampoo oil to combat hygral fatigue.
Wheat Germ Oil
My favorite essentials oils are peppermint and tea tree oil.
Peppermint oil awakens hair follicles and stimulate hair growth. Simply add a few drops of peppermint oil to a carrier oil of choice and massage it on your scalp several times per week. An excellent oil blend is peppermint oil mixed with Jamaican Black Castor Oil. What a hair treat!
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has anti-fungal properties and is excellent for addressing irritations such as dry, itchy, flaky scalp.
