What is the Curly Tee Towel? The name Curly Tee Towel can be misleading. First off, it’s not just for curlies and secondly, it’s not even a towel. It’s an oversized jersey cotton shaped t-shirt with a drawstring.

Assessment: The oversized design makes it easy to put on and take off. My hair comfortably fits inside the towel without being bent, balled and crinkled. This is important because the ability to keep my hair straight while drying means smoother results. The drawstring helps with adjusting the size to fit my head. I cannot compliment the oversize design enough as it doesn’t tug, grab and break nape hairs like t-shirts. My hair comes out frizz free and the cuticles are not roughed up during the drying process.
Use: The towel comes with an instruction card with starter ideas of how to tie the towel. I tried a variety of options before settling on tying it just like I tie my t-shirts — a big bun at the nape. There is no right or wrong although other options did not allow my hair to properly dry.
There is an art to using this towel. My hair has a tendency to hold water when wet because I have medium to thick strands with medium to high density. Therefore, if I fail to squeeze excess water from my hair, the towel will become too saturated to effectively absorb the remaining water from my hair. A few squeezes to the hair before putting the towel on solves this issue. I really like the material and gentle feel of the Curly Tee Towel. It absorbs about 80% of the water from my hair which is perfect for my hair drying procedure.
Hair Rules: DO NOT use bath towels to dry your hair. It will rough up cuticles, rob hair of moisture and produce frizz. I’m sure we’ve all heard something similar to this, right? Therefore, ditching towels was one of the first agenda items on my healthy hair journey. Standard bath towels were quickly replaced by terry cloth towels. While terry cloth towels are indeed gentler than bath towels, my hair still felt rough to the touch. I eventually replaced my terry cloth towels with cotton t-shirts. T-shirts worked good although it wasn’t a perfect solution. It was, however, the best solution available at that time. Now that I’ve been introduced to the Curly Tee Towel, I’m definitely moving on from cotton t-shirts.
Why Curly Tee Towel? Let me just keep it real, I get the Curly Tee Towel is not for everyone. I also understand that some will argue a t-shirt is just as good, better and cheaper. I honestly cannot find valid arguments to suggest those statements are inaccurate but I will say this, the Curly Tee Towel is definitely better for me. Why? Ok, so this might just freak some of you out BUT I am able to reuse the towel multiple times before having to wash it. The Curly Tee Towel dries quickly and doesn’t show stains or smell sour from being damp or wet. My t-shirts will develop an odor if I don’t hang them up and let them air dry properly. The Curly Tee Towel doesn’t require that. I’ve mistakenly left the Curly Tee Towel balled up on the bathroom counter to find it dry and without a sour smell when I returned.
A reviewer on Naturally Curly pointed out a few excellent points: a regular t-shirt doesn’t always contain the hair whereas the Curly Tee Towel does. Its edges are sewn together which keeps the hair enclosed and curls intact. The enclosed design definitely helps reduce frizz and absorbs dripping water.
Product Claims: The Curly Tee Towel lives up to its product claims. It doesn’t strip product from my hair. My hair tends to dry a lot smoother when I add a little bit of leave-in to my hair when it is 60% dry. I then place the towel back on my head until my hair is about 80% dry, at which point I apply more leave-ins. Applying product when 60% dry helps my hair to dry smoother from root to tip. T-shirts tend to rub product off my hair when doing this step but the Curly Tee Towel doesn’t. Instead, my hair feels smoother and softer because product is penetrating into the hair rather than being rubbed off.
I love my Curly Tee Towel for the reasons mentioned above. No, it’s not a must-have but it’s definitely a nice to have.
