The Denman Brush is a popular detangling brush for natural hair. It has an anti-static rubber cushion base with smooth bristles that are resistant to heat and chemicals. Therefore, it can be used on wet or dry hair for detangling and heat styling.
Modifying Your Denman Brush
The Denman Brush comes in a 5-row (for short to medium length hair), 7-row (for medium to long hair) and 9-row (for long hair) brush design. The 7-row brush is popular amongst naturals. Many modify their brush by removing two rows to create a 5-row brush because fewer rows reduce stress when detangling our hair. I’ve used my 7-row brush with and without modification but haven’t noticed much difference. Therefore, I prefer to use all seven rows versus modifying it.
Check YouTube for how to modify your brush.
Using the Denman Brush on Type 4 Hair
Many type 4 naturals hate the Denman Brush because the bristles are closely spaced together and can be damaging if used improperly. The characteristics of our hair should determine how we use our Denman. My hair is kinky. Therefore, I cannot pass the brush through large sections of hair as shown on silky naturals on YouTube.
Instead, I work in small sections to easily pass the brush through my hair without damage. I detangle my hair by using a picking motion from my ends up to the roots just as I would when using a comb. This technique removes tangles and shed hair without causing breakage.
Things to Know
I use the 7-row brush on wet or damp hair because I try to avoid manipulating my hair when its in the dry state.
Another great tip is to never use the Denman first! I always start with finger detangling (pre-wash) followed by wide tooth combing (shower detangling). The Denman brush is used last while my hair is full of slippery conditioner: Paul Mitchell The Conditioner. This conditioner allows the Denman brush to glide right through my type 4 curls with ease. I’m left with super defined coils.
