Subscription boxes are the in-thing in the beauty industry right now. I have been a Birchbox Girl, Julep Maven and Rocksbox It Girl. I have considered but not purchased other subscription boxes like Ipsy, curlBOX, and Curlkit to name a few. As you can see, beauty box options are endless. Coming to a mailbox near you, may be what we, women of color, consider a game changer – say hello to Essence Beauty Box.

I learned about Essence Beauty Box while attending Essence Fest 2015. I spoke to the General Manager of the Beauty Box and she compared it to the monthly subscription boxes I named in the opening paragraph. The difference being, the Essence Beauty Box is curated specifically for women of color.
I loved being a Birchbox member but I often felt the products were NOT suited for my skin type and skin tone. Therefore, I struggled to find beauty products that worked for me. Birchbox allowed me to fill out a questionnaire at the start of my membership to get to know me and my skin. However, Birchbox paid little attention to it as they kept sending one failed beauty product after another. I eventually cancelled my membership because it was just not a good fit for me at that time.
Hearing about the Essence Beauty Box renewed my hope for beauty box subscriptions since it is for women of color! I have big expectations that I hope are fulfilled and exceeded by Essence Beauty Box. I find it odd that Essence did not include a survey or questionnaire during sign up about skin type, skin tone, problem areas, etc. Does that then mean all skin types and tones will receive the same products? Regardless, I will give it a try and will definitely share with you what comes in my box.
