This post and accompanying video provides an overview of how to flat iron transitioning hair. I also use the same techniques for flat ironing relaxed hair.
Flat Iron Transitioning Hair | Relaxed Hair Technique
The comb chase method does not work for me. Therefore, I work in small sections with making sure the hair is properly detangled before I run the flat iron over the section. Depending on how much new growth is present, I will run the comb back through that section of hair to ensure the line of demarcation does not have any snags or tangles. When I flat iron freshly relaxed hair, this step is not required. It only becomes an issue when there is a lot of new growth present. When I flat iron transitioning hair, the step is always required.

Fantasia Hair Care Products
The Fantasia Hair Care Shampoo and Conditioner preps and protects the hair from heat with a proprietary blend of ingredients, extracts of hydrolyzed wheat protein, avocado oil, aloe vera and soy proteins. Together, these ingredients are suppose to infuse moisture into the hair.
Fantasia Hair Polish Heat Protector Shampoo
The Fantasia Hair Polish Heat Protector Shampoo cleansed my hair without making it feel dry. I was able to run the comb through my hair from root to tip while rinsing out the shampoo. It offered a good lather and left my hair soft and manageable.
Fantasia Hair Polish Heat Protector Conditioner
The Fantasia Hair Polish Heat Protector Conditioner is more of a rinse out conditioner with the instructions saying to leave it on for 1 to 2 minutes. My hair did not feel soft immediately after applying the conditioner but softness and slip was present upon rinsing.
Fantasia Hair Care Assessment
Heat Usage Wash Day
I normally do a protein treatment before using heat but did not this time around. The shampoo and conditioner included enough protein to give my hair the strength it needed when using heat. The shampoo has soy protein and wheat protein. The conditioner has wheat protein. Not having to do an actual protein treatment definitely saved on time.
Although the shampoo and conditioner left my hair feeling soft, the rinse out conditioner does not offer enough moisture to combat the drying effects of heat usage. Therefore, a deep conditioner is needed.
Heat Free Wash Day
My hair did ok when not following up with deep conditioner but it wasn’t well hydrated.
Ingredients
I get why companies have proprietary blends but I like knowing what I’m putting in my hair and on my scalp. My hair generally does not do well with hydrolyzed wheat protein and aloe vera but it did fine when following up with a deep conditioner.
Moisture
While I don’t believe it infused moisture in my hair since deep conditioning was required, I feel it provided my hair with something that it is normally missing. Many times after flat ironing, I tend to see tiny little pieces of breakage. I did not experience that with incorporating the Fantasia Hair Care products.
Heat Protection
Perhaps the proprietary blend offers some heat protection benefits. However, I will never use heat without using an actual heat protectant. Therefore, I cannot properly rate its effectiveness in this category. But then again, as previously mentioned, I did not experience any tiny pieces of breakage that I normally experience.

Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Leave In Conditioner
The Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Leave In Conditioner is very thick and moisturizing. It absorbedquickly and did not leave behind residue. This product is perfect for coarse hair but is far too thick for fine hair.

TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray
Although not shown in the video, I sprayed each section with the TRESemme Heat Tamer Spray before flat ironing.

Babyliss Pro Titanium Nano Flat Iron
I’ve owned my Babyliss Pro Titanium Nano for about 10 years or more. I purchased this particular flat iron because my hairstylist was using at the time.
I flat iron on 300 degrees, which is the lowest possible setting. And yes, my flat iron sometimes give off smoke but it is not too hot nor damaging my hair.
When I flat iron transitioning hair and relaxed hair bone straight, I use a heat temperature of about 400. Using a heat temperature of 300 does not get my hair super straight. I’m left with some texture and thickness at the roots.

Haitian Black Castor Oil
Haitian Black Castor Oil is perfect for sealing in moisture and stimulating the scalp. I used about a pea sized amount on my hair and scalp after I was done flat ironing.

The hair product that I can’t do without is conditioner, specifically Aussie Moist. No matter how dry my hair is, this conditioner will bring it back to life. It also makes detangling a breeze.
It has awesome slip!
How do you combat breakage after so long without a relaxer?
I lessen the manipulation as much as possible by washing less frequently and wearing wigs. I also did a few articles on ways to stretch without breakage. Those should help you. I learned those through trial and error.
Jay, your hair is looking so good! How is the thinning at the ends going? It really looks like you’ve stopped that completely.

TY! It’s not thinning any further thank goodness. I’m trimming slowing but surely to remove all past problems.
I have heard so much about the castor oil. I think l will give it a try, maybe the hair will finally grow. I got some pure Balinese coconut oil recently. Unfortunately, it is still “sleeping”. Gotta figure out how to wake it up. My hair needs it. 🙂

I’ve never heard of Balinese Coconut. How does it differ from Extra Virgin Coconut Oil?
Your hair is thriving chica! Makes me want to flat iron my hair—then my arms get tired just thinking about it. LOL.

TY and you know it! My arms tire out easily.
These products sound great! No breakage while flat ironing, that’s a good look because with me being 8 months post managing the different textures are no joke. I like the option to flat iron if I want to.

No joke is an understatement. Like, it’s brutal.
Loving your variety of products. I am a fan of Shea Moisture- So I will be trying the milk, I want to start flat ironing my hair more, I never get it done, and I should more often, so thanks for your insight.
I love using Aussie 3 MINUTE MIRACLE MOIST, especially during these cold months.
3 Minute Miracle is liked by many. I used it once or twice but don’t recall the results.
Your line up of products before applying heat seems a very good choice to combat heat damage! Never heard of Haitian Black Castor Oil before.
You know the healthy hair community stay finding new staples.
Yep, amazing!
🙂
I usually boost up the protein in my regimen if I’m going to be heat styling. This looks like a great alternative!
Totally agree! The shampoo and conditioner offer protein so additional protein was not required. Saved a little time there.
I cannot live without my Cantu leave in conditioner! I put some in a spray bottle with water and spray my hair with it daily and it makes my hair so soft and manageable. When I skip a day or forget it’s very obvious because my hair starts to rebel against me lol.
I slept on Cantu for the longest but they really do have a good solid line.
I love castor oil and Shea Moisture products. Really good tips to for when I decide to heat style my hair.
Hey, TY!!!
I can’t be without hair growth oil my hair itches alot
Does your oil help with growth?
Can’t be without my detangling conditioner. It only means no wash anytime soon. lol
Detanglers, be it sprays or conditioners, are a must.
I can’t go without using my MOROCCANOIL Moroccanoil Treatment!
I’ve tried this oil before and it smells so good.
Good tips and demo! I haven’t prepped for direct heat use in over two years now.
If I was going to do it today, I’d use a balancing DC to get strength and moisture all at once, use my favorite spray protein leave in, and seal it all in with a silicone serum. Tension blow dry on cool/low heat then flat iron on 300-310°. It’s been a long time since I’ve gone for bone straight hair so thick roots would be fine with me.
I’m totally ok with thick roots too. I don’t have the time nor the energy for straight hair results.
I’ll have to try these products. I’m transitioning my hair and sadly I experienced a lot of hair breakage and hair loss.
Stick around. Hopefully some of my content can help you.
I love & look forward to seeing your youtube videos.
Thank you so much!
What I can’t be without? I feel like I always have a bottle of the doo gro mega thick growth oil and Futurebiotics HSN vitamins in my cabinets. I may have cycled through everything else, but those two are always there.
Does doo goo offer any accelerated growth?
I’ve never heard of many of these products, but I’m interested in trying the castor oil.

I love Jamaican Black and Haitian Black is performing quite the same. A friend told me her family uses Haitian Black to cure colds.
There is so much I wish I had known when I was transitioning. It’s definitely a lot of work, and I didn’t realize the need for making sure hair was fully detangled prior to washing it (hence why I needed to do a big chop after a transition shampoo/wash where all my hair was clumped together lol). I love that there are so many products now to help with this process.
I had to chop hair before for this very reason and oh my gosh, the nightmare.
I’m going to bookmark this video because I’ve never been great at flat ironing my hair but it’s something I really want to get master. Also, I’m going to give that Haitian castor oil a try too.

These are great tips! I hadn’t heard of some of these products, so I will definitely be looking into them more.

TY! 🙂
Now, I’m using E’tae. I also use a flat iron spray that goes on prior to drying your hair. It helps. Great tips. The comb-chase method works wonders.
TY. I feel like my line of dermacation isn’t ready. I need it to get a little stronger. I know that method gets the hair super straight with limited passes.
When my hair was relaxed, my biggest issue was breakage from heat styling or over processing. Now as a natural, moisture is the issue. Ugh!!! I like how you broke everything down. Bookmarked for later reference…
