I have yet to master blending my transitioning hair with my relaxed hair. Therefore, my cheat method is to do flexi rods on transitioning hair to stretch the new growth. I then complete the look with an updo. Today’s post shows how I create an elegant hair bun with accessorizing with a wire headband. The headband and updo combination blends differing textures and makes my frizzy natural hair not as noticeable.
Flexi Rods on Transitioning Hair
You can use any flexi rods that you desire although I prefer larger flexi rods. I love the elongated, ringlet curls the larger flexi rods create. Looser curls work better for my hair – my ends appear smoother, my hair accepts moisture better and it tangle less. When my hair is set on smaller flexi rods, my ends are frizzy and my hair is harder to moisturize. However, for the shorter nape hair, I occasionally use smaller flexi rods.
I recorded the Flexi Rod Tutorial when I had relaxed hair but I use the same methods now that I have transitioning hair.

Products to Set Transitioning Hair
My product combination is forever changing (that was true even when fully relaxed) as I’m always looking for the next best thing. Luckily, I found great products for moisturizing transitioning hair but I’m still working on finding the perfect combination to wet set kinky, coily transitioning hair that is prone to dryness. For the style shown in the below video, I used Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk and Hicks Transformations Smooth Edges.

Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk
Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk worked well on my hair although it did not leave my transitioning hair with much shine. My hair was soft though. In doing research, many transitioners suggest using a serum for increased shine. I will try that next time.

Hicks Transformations Smooth Edges Styling Gel
Hicks Transformations Smooth Edges is my go-to gel because when applied to my hair, it doesn’t make my edges revert. It provides a soft hold, doesn’t flake and is non-greasy. You can use as little or as much you need to get the job done without your edges becoming hard. I wasn’t going for a super sleek look in the video so I used just enough to cut the frizz and fly aways. If I’m looking to achieve a really sleek look, I increase the amount of gel that I use.

Hair Accessories
Good Days Hair Pins
I purchase the Good Days Hair Pins from Sally Beauty Supply. They are so much better than hair pins because they do not snag the hair.
U-Shape Banana Clip
I purchased my u-shape banana clips many years ago and have a hard time finding replacements over the years. A good alternative are Goody Ouchless Ribbon Hair Elastics which I often use.
Headband
Purchased from Vine 80 at a Natural Hair Show in New Orleans.
Flexi-rods are one of my favorite hair tools; mainly because they are easy to use and I can sleep in them. I like that I have a bit more control with them than magnetic rollers or perm rods.
I too feel I have more control. I’ve tried sleeping in them once, never again. They hurt my head.
For the life of me—I can’t get the hang of flexi-rods! Le-sigh!
Love this bun and those curls chica! Fantastic tips!

TY K! I’m so much better with flexis than magnetics.
I tried flexi-rods once, but I think I should have done it on wet hair. Setting on anything other than wet hair doesn’t seem to work for me. I need to work on my elasticity issues. Are those hair pins plastic? I really hate having metal in my hair, kind of like people hate rubbing balloons or dragging chairs. If those hair pins are plastic I’ll be ordering them ASAP!
Hi Aine, what are you doing to help with elasticity? The hair pins are plastic so you’re in luck! Here’s the description taken from Amazon — “Good Hair Days Magic-Grip Hairpins are a quality combination of superior flexible plastic material and unique hairpin design that holds lots of hair.” I hate latex balloons. They pop way too easily and I hate that.
These are pretty on you. I cut my hair so I have to wait until it grows a bit to flexi rod it.

TY so much, Stacie! They have varying sizes so if not the large, maybe the smaller ones for now.
Its super cute. I remember your video on the different ways to create curls with flexi-rods. How long did the curls last?

TY. About a week when I pin curl them at night. About 4 or 5 days if I pineapple and not really doing much at the gym.
Lovely curls Jay. What is your hair type?
Hi Lebo! I’m not good at hair typing. I definitely feel that I’m in the 4s. Like 4c maybe. I have some areas that appear a tad bit looser than 4c…4b maybe? I’ve always heard / read having relaxed ends alter the appear of your real texture. I showed a photo of my natural hair in the post prior to this one did you that photo?
I love the hair. Beautiful!

🙂 TY sis!
Really cute! I haven’t been too successful with flexi rods unless it was on braids or twists, but I’ll definitely be trying them again within the coming months.

TY Joanna, do you braid/twist and then flexi the hair to provide it with a little curl on the ends?
I used flexi rods while I was pregnant in 2004. My hair was growing like crazy, the Mister didn’t want me putting chemicals in my hair at that time. I had a wedding to attend and I looked a mess.
I had flexi rods put in and it was the best of both worlds. It blended the two textures and you couldn’t tell I had an afro on my scalp.
You’re so funny. Mister probably was right though. Most ladies tend to avoid chemicals while pregnant, or limit them at least. Blending textures is so hard. Right now, wearing headbands is really helping hide that I’m working with multiple textures.
beautiful curls!
TY Nay!!!
I love using flexirods, especially since I try to not use as much heat on my hair as I used to when it was relaxed.
I want to master magnetic rollers again. I had it down when I was fully relaxed but I’m not quite as good with it with having multiple textures.
I love flexi rods to avoid using so much heat on my hair, especially my extensions. I loved the video your curls came out great!

TY!!! I recently purchased a curling wand for my wig and love that thing. I will try flexi rods next to reduce some of the direct heat usage.
I wish I knew these tips when I was transitioning. I just threw wigs on my head and called it a day!

Did your edges do well with wearing wigs? So far, mine are good but I hear so many horror stories.
Flex is are my favorite. Turned out nice too!

TY girlfriend!
Ooooh! Flexib rods were my fave when I transitioned. I love the options and sleek look that the style delivers. 🙂
How long did you transition?
I have been wanting to try these. Super cute style and it appears to be easy enough for me to do LOL.
Flexis are so much easier than magnetic rollers (to me) although I love how sleek magnetic rollers make the hair.
Your hair looks great! I need to get me some flexi rods. I would love to see how my hair turns out with them.

I get mine from Sally’s Beauty Supply. I’m pretty sure the local beauty supply store would sell them too. I think you’ll enjoy the curls.
Your hair looks amazing. I never thought to utilize flexi rods when I was transitioning. I love that you are providing this how to for us transitioners. Thanks for sharing
TY for visiting and let’s make this transition great!
This was beautiful! I love a flexirod set! They always seem to come out smooth and shiny!
Muah!!! Thank you pretty lady.
