I’m going natural!!! Kidding…for now at least. However, had I announced I am transitioning to natural hair, most would say congrats and be supportive of my decision. You respect that hair decisions are not permanent. Decisions change as life circumstances change. Why isn’t that same courtesy extended to naturals that announce they are going back to relaxed hair?
Natural Hair to Relaxed Hair Fury
Recently a natural announced she was going back to relaxed hair. I immediately thought, ut-oh, “they” are gonna come for you! Before those words could pass through my mind, it happened. Just so that we are clear, “they” does not refer to all naturals.
“They” refers to naturals that are disappointed and angered by your hair decisions as-if you’re impacting their life.
“They” are those naturals that bash you for making a decision that benefits you and your lifestyle.
“They” are the naturals that fail to recognize all hair is not created equal, thus expecting someone to stay natural for the sake of being able to say girl, I’m natural and I feel empowered is ridiculous.
“They” are the naturals who act like every kinky, curly, coily chick suppose to love and embrace natural hair.
“They” get on my nerves.
Naturals, Please Let Relaxed Hair Ladies Live
Why can’t some naturals accept healthy hair can be relaxed hair or natural hair. Having natural hair does not make hair healthy by default. It takes work just like relaxed hair.Having #naturalhair does not make your hair healthy by default. It takes work! #byobeautiful Click To Tweet
Naturals can shade relaxed hair all they want but many of them struggle with single strand knots, dry hair, breakage and long detangling sessions. Some fail to retain length and struggle to style their hair. Not everyone goes natural and hits jackpot. The challenges of having natural hair seems quite downplayed and strategically overlooked so they can be able to say – girl, I’m so glad I left that creamy crack alone.Forget what you heard, #relaxedhair can be healthy too. How dare you suggest otherwise. Click To Tweet
Words Can Come Back and Haunt You!
Could it be that naturals have set themselves up for backlash? I’m not saying they deserve it but I believe what you say and how your project yourself matters. They spend so much time bashing relaxers that when it is announced they are going back to relaxed hair, many naturalistas feel betrayed. Because words can be haunting, it’s a wise practice to watch what you say and how you say it.
