Your hair is (natural/relaxed/etc)?
My hair is relaxed and I think my natural texture is 4a.
When and why did you start your healthy hair journey?
I started wanting to take better care of my hair in 2008 after a very bad haircut and growing out of my tomboyish ways, but saw the majority of my progress in 2010 after the remnants of the bad haircut were gone. I usually just say 2010 for simplicity.
What is your current length? What is your goal length?
My hair length is in an awkward stage between BSL and MBL. The longest my hair has been is WL so I’m trying to get it back there then progress towards HL.
What is your regimen – wash day, daily, nightly?
I just wash, condition, and blow-dry every 5-7 days. I try to use a shampoo with zinc pyrithione to avoid any seborrheic dermatitis flare-ups and condition for about 10-15 minutes while exfoliating in the shower. Before blow-drying, I towel-dry my hair then I might apply a styling oil and/or serum to protect my hair from the heat and for shine — if I remember. When finished, I’ll usually leave my hair down to go out or put in a twisted bun to sleep; if I do the latter, my hair will be left down for waves the next day. I do not apply any leave-in conditioner or moisturizer in my hair or during the week between washes.
How often do you touch-up / trim / use heat?
I use heat every 5-7 days, get touch-ups every 3-4 months, and dust my hair during my touch-ups every 3-4 months. I’m thinking of skipping dusting to every other touch-up which would be every 6-8 months though, we’ll see!
What’s your fave go-to style?
I just like to leave my hair down every time I go out — I guess that’s my favourite! Maybe when my hair is longer, I’ll be more adventurous with styling.
What do you love most and least about your hair?
I love how easy it is to take care of my hair and how little my hair requires for great retention. I just kind of wish I was able to take of my two textures while stretching a bit better but it’s not really a big deal.
Do you take any supplements or use growth-aides? How have they helped?
I take supplements for overall health and I do not use growth-aides. I have not found that supplements have helped with increased growth at all but maybe with thickness. In fact, from mere observation, I have found that supplements tend to make my hair more resistant to relaxers which is both a good and bad thing.
What has helped you most in achieving and maintaining length?
Conditioning, stretching, detangling with a wide-tooth comb, and getting trims (instead of cuts) have really improved my ability to see increased length. I will say conditioning is my be all and end all though, my hair needs that protein boost!
Name a hair product, accessory or tool you cannot be without? And why?
Ooooh this is too hard! Okay, I may cheat… a lot:
- Hair Product:
- Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Complete Care Anti-Dandruff Pyrithione Zinc Shampoo
- Organix Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Conditioner
- Organix Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Dry Styling Oil
- Organix Anti-Breakage Keratin Oil
- Butterfly clips
- Wide-tooth comb
Okay… that’s a lot… I guess if I had to really choose just one it would be my wide-tooth comb. Detangling properly is one of the main components of my hair routine that helps me retain length and avoid breakage — I couldn’t do this without my trusty wide-tooth comb. Even though the products make aspects of my routine easier, I guess I can always discover something better out there or at least a replacement that is on par if needed. Although, I highly doubt anything will replace this essential tool for me.
