Your hair is? Newly Natural
When and why did you start your healthy hair journey? I started my hair journey officially on November 1, 2012. I had joined Hairlista and was seeing all of these girls with long pretty hair and never thought that I could achieve anything past shoulder length. After doing a lot of research and looking at numerous hair regimens, I decided to make my own hair regimen and stick to it. I decided to transition to natural in February of 2013.
What is your current length? What is your goal length? My length before big chopping was 18 inches and I cut off 14 inches of relaxed hair. My current length is ear length (a little over 5 inches) and my short term goal length is between neck and shoulder length (12 inches). I would ultimately like to be waist length.
What is your regimen – wash day, daily, nightly?
Clarifying Wash Day 1x a Month
-Hot Oil Treatment w/ Safflower, Coconut, and Olive Oil
-ORS Aloe Shampoo (clarify) (will change to Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo)
-Ion Hard Water Shampoo (chelate) (will change to Kinky Curly Come Clean)
-SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque or Giovanni Smooth As Silk
-As I am Leave-In Conditioner
-Oil Scalp with Jojoba or Africa’s Best Herbal Oil with a few drops of peppermint oil or lavender oil.
-L.O.C. Method on wash day. (L) As I Am Leave-In, (O) Olive Oil, (C) SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Spritz w/ distilled water every few days.
How often do you trim / use heat? At the start of my hair journey when I relaxed, I went from heat styling weekly to doing it only 3 times in 2013. I would dust my ends monthly and trim ½ inch every 3 months. Since I am natural, I don’t heat style at all and I’ve dusted my ends once in the past 3 months.
What’s your fave go-to style? Super defined curls with a Denman Brush (D3).
What do you love most and least about your hair? I am absolutely in love with my curls. I’ve never seen my natural curl pattern until I big chopped in October 2013. So I’m getting to know my hair all over again. What I like least about it is that I wish I had more length. Mainly because I’ve never had hair this short or curly before, so I have to research hairstyles to find out what I want to do with it. Youtube and Pinterest are my best friends for that.
Do you take any supplements or use growth-aides? How have they helped? I have used growth aids in the past, but wasn’t consistent enough to see any results. I now take a multi-vitamin and Biotin 1,000 mcg daily for nutritional support because I eat horribly. Lol. But that will soon change.
What has helped you most in achieving and maintaining length? Deep conditioners whether it’s moisturizing or protein have helped me THE MOST! I didn’t even know that they existed before starting a hair regimen. -_- I’ve always had shoulder length hair when I was relaxed, but when I started deep conditioning regularly, I was able to achieve bra strap length hair.
Name a hair product, accessory, or tool you cannot be without? And why? Since becoming natural, I cannot live without my Denman D3 Brush. When I first big chopped, I would define my curls with my fingers one by one which would take hours. With my Denman Brush, I am able to define my curls within an hour and they last all week. Plus, it helps to detangle my hair thoroughly. LOVE this brush!!!!
