Your hair is? I have been natural for 16 months now.
When and why did you start your healthy hair journey? I started my healthy hair journey back in October of 2012. I really got tired of my hair breaking, shedding, and thinning. I also had a bad experience with my last relaxer. So I decided to start taking care of my hair. YouTube was a great help.
What is your current length / goal length? My hair is neck length now. My goal length is waist length when the hair is straightened.
What is your regimen – wash day, daily, nightly? I don’t really have a regimen anymore. I wash my hair when I feel that it’s dirty, or when I have to wash some gel out. But I do moisturize and seal my ends everyday. My nightly routine is simple. I love to use some creamy moisturizer on my hair before I wrap it with a satin scarf to keep my hair soft during the night.
How often do you touch-up / trim / use heat? Let me tell you a story. I straightened my hair 3 months ago, and I did a sew-in without doing a protein treatment first. God, just when I thought natural hair could not get damaged easily! The whole time I had the sew-in, a little voice in me kept telling me that something was wrong. So, I took the weave out 3 weeks later. I am still paying for my mistake. It was the first time I had straightened my hair in almost two years. No need to tell you that it will take a special occasion to get me to put heat on my hair again. I trimmed my hair 2 times already, once in September, and once in October, because I was left with thin, heat damaged ends. I hope I won’t have to trim again until next year.
What’s your fave go-to style?
The bun. I love putting my hair in a bun. I faked it a lot before my hair was long enough to do it. I even did it when I suffered from Alopecia. I lost all the hair in the middle of my head. Thank God the little bit that I had around my head could cover the hole. I own two faux Afro ponytails, and I cannot wait to buy another one.
What do you love most and least about your hair? Right now I love the versatility. I love my 4c curls, but I hate when my hair shrinks.
Do you take any supplements or use growth-aides? How have they helped? I had to take biotin before I became natural because I lost hair from different parts of my head. Taking biotin really helped me cover the patches. It’s been a year since I took any supplements for hair growth. I am currently taking Iron and Vitamin B12, but I don’t think they are helping me much.
What has helped you most in achieving and maintaining length? Black castor oil helps me in achieving length, but moisturizing my ends with water everyday and sleeping on a silk pillow case at night help me retain length.
Name a hair product, accessory or tool you cannot be without? And why? Before I went natural I could not live without Scurl “No Drip” Activator Moisturizer. I was like a crackhead when I did not have this product on my wash days. Now I am so in love with Giovanni Direct Leave-In Conditioner. If you have 4c hair and you are not using this product, honey, you are missing out. I cannot live without my wide tooth comb and stretchy headbands either.
