Your hair is (natural/relaxed/etc)? Relaxed
When and why did you start your healthy hair journey? I started my journey on August 11, 2012. My previous stylist relocated and a new stylist took over her clients. The new stylist was so rough with my hair. After washing my hair she would roughly dry it with a towel and I could hear and feel my hair snapping due to breakage. Each time I told her she would argue that I had not lost any hair. Well I knew this was not the case. After spending my hard earned money I decided I had to find other options for hair care. This is when I took matters into my own hands. I searched the Internet and found sites like LHCF, KISS, and Just Grow Already. This is when I decided to start a healthy hair journey.
What is your current length? My current length is grazing APL but I plan to get it cut to closer to SL. Since starting my journey I have not had a good trim. I have done them myself and I believe I need a good trim.
What is your goal length? My short-term goal length is full APL and my long-term goal length is BSL.
What is your regimen – wash day, daily, nightly?
My regimen is as follows:
- Every Saturday I pre-poo with Soultanicals The Power of the Poo under my heating cap for 30 mins.
- Rinse with Hairveda’s PH Balancing Rinse
- DC with a moisturizing conditioner like Bee Mine Bee-u-ti-ful or Silk Dreams Shea What Deux. I mix this with Manuka Honey, Peppermint, and Rosemary Oil.
- For protein treatments I use Komaza Care Protein Strengthener or KeraCare Super
- Reconstructor. I always do a moisturizing DC after a protein treatment.
- Cold water rinse and let hair dry under my turbie twist for 30 minutes.
- Next, I apply leave-ins such as KeraCare Leave-in conditioner and It’s a 10 Leave-in.
- Last air dry or roller set.
How often do you touch-up / trim / use heat? I touch-up every 13 weeks but trying to stretch to 16 weeks. I would like to do only 3 touch-ups per year. I trim twice a year or whenever needed. I only use direct heat the week prior to a touch-up.
What’s your fave go-to style? My favorite go-to style is a roller set. You can do so much with your hair when roller setting. It provides a smooth healthy style that can be worn straight, curly, or in an up do. It gets hair straight with the use of indirect heat
What do you love most and least about your hair? I have learned to embrace my hair. I would say I don’t like the fact that one side grows faster and longer than the other. I love the fact that my hair has always been thick.
Do you take any supplements or use growth-aides? How have they helped? I take Hair Essentials and Mineral Rich. They have helped me in my quest for healthy hair.
What has helped you most in achieving and maintaining length? Not using heat has been a game changer for me. Another thing that has helped me is using seamless combs, not combing my hair other than on wash-day, co-washing, and deep conditioning once per week.
Name a hair product, accessory or tool you cannot be without? And why? I could not live without my hair steamer. It really helps my hair stay moisturized.
