Have you considered the pros and cons of heat styling vs. air drying relaxed hair and which is best for your hair? Just because the healthy hair community suggests air drying is the way to go, doesn’t mean that’s the best choice for you.
Thoughts on Heat Styling vs. Air Drying Relaxed Hair
Throughout the years, I always felt my relaxed hair performed best when heat styled although I didn’t have any real proof. However, the manipulation and drying times were a complete turnoff. The convenience of air drying relaxed hair is far more enticing but even that’s not perfect. With air drying, I battle tangles, dryness, breakage and bushy ends. So which is best – heat styling or air drying? To solve the mystery, I put my hair through a test and here’s what I figured out…
Week 1: Air Drying Relaxed Hair
My hair was matted and clumped together when air drying. I had to comb through it excessively to keep mini dreads from forming. Let’s not even discuss breakage. My air dried hair felt thick as straw and lacked elasticity. Basically, my hair broke off with the least bit of manipulation. At the end of wash day, my hair had bounce and hydration but lacked moisture by midweek. It’s almost like moisture either does one of two things, never absorb into my hair or escapes quickly. At any rate, I’m always left with dry, breaking hair after air drying.
Pros: quick and convenient | Cons: my hair does not retain moisure
My hair dried with sheen and hydration. By midweek, my hair was not tangled and still hydrated. The roots were not thirsty and begging for hydration. When I combed, there were no snags or matted sections of hair. Moisture really clung to my hair which allowed my hair to feel good the entire week.
Pros: my hair retains moisture and breaks less | Cons: time consuming and a lot of manipulation
Which is The Winner?
Long after this post was written, I continued using indirect heat on my hair on a weekly basis with success. In comparing the pros and cons of heat styling vs. air drying, even with the increased manipulation, heat styling is the definite win!
