MSM is the acronym for methylsufonylmethane which is the third largest compound found in the human body. MSM is sulfur-based and responsible for improving the health of hair, skin and nails. Many reported increased hair growth and softer hair with MSM use. I’m looking for ways to soften my hair during long relaxer stretches. However, if my hair grows a little faster while I’m at it, I’ll take it! This post will document my experience with using MSM for hair growth and softness.
Experimenting with MSM for Hair Growth
My experiment with MSM will be a DIY refresher spray and a DIY deep conditioner mix.
MSM Daily Refresher Spray
To create the refresher spray, I mixed 1 teaspoon of MSM powder in 8 ounces of water. I used the refresher spray for two weeks twice daily before applying moisturizer and sealant.
My hair felt soft and hydrated initially but felt extremely dry end of day. Although sulfur is a great growth aide, it is also very drying. For this reason, MSM did not work as a daily refresher spray.
MSM Deep Conditioning Mix
I mixed 1 tablespoon MSM to my staple deep conditioner on two separate occasions. I deep conditioned with my hair steamer for 30 minutes before following up with my normal leave-in regimen. My hair felt extremely dry both times.
MSM is simply not for me. Therefore, I am unable to assess whether it will promote hair growth. It didn’t, however, soften my hair. I’ll just stick with eating a healthy-ish diet and taking my multivitamin.
