Are you properly taking care of your hair in the morning but neglecting it at night? For relaxed hair to grow long and healthy, we need a relaxed hair night routine to ensure our hair is hydrated and protected throughout the night. While the environment (wind, cold, sun, etc) can be damaging, neglecting our hair at night can also take a toll if we fail to protect it from friction and dryness.
Relaxed Hair Night Routine | The Steps
1. Gently Finger Comb Hair
This helps to separate the strands to prepare the hair for light combing.
2. Moisturize Hair
I divide my hair in 2 quadrants with finger parting the hair down the middle of my head. I then moisturize each section. Note: I don’t measure the amount of moisturizer used. I simply use enough product until the hair feels nicely moisturized. Using good judgment as my guide has improved the moisturizing step. Way back when, I was patterning myself after others and going about things all wrong. Those that I was emulating were using dime size amounts of product. I noticed my hair was always exceptionally dry but could never figure out why. One day I finally decided to use my personal judgment on the amount of product to use and things turned around from that point. Don’t be afraid to use additional product to get the job done.
3. Seal or Baggy My Hair
Sometimes I seal, sometimes not, just depends on what I’m trying to achieve. If my hair is balanced and not begging for moisture, I will seal from root to tip with a few drops of oil and place a scarf on my head for the evening. If my hair is begging for moisture, I skip sealing and move straight to whole head baggying overnight. I secure the baggy by placing a scarf over the plastic cap.
4. Lightly Comb Through Hair
I have disobedient hair! It requires frequent combing to ensure the strands do not become clingy, clumpy or matted. If completing a simple moisturize / seal, I will lightly comb after I’ve sealed. If I’m whole head baggying, I will lightly comb after moisturizing.
5. Bun then Scarf Hair Overnight
I ensure my hair is twirled into a loose bun before securing my hair with a silk or satin scarf. Having the hair twisted in a bun keeps things nice and neat which come the following morning, helps me to get out of the door a tad bit quicker.
Relaxed Hair Night Routine | The Video
From start to finish, my night time routine takes about 10 minutes. I’m usually in no rush and I use this time to relax, unwind and just have some me time.
What’s your relaxed hair night routine?
Very nice video and very informative. I will have to try AOWC. I see nothing but good reviews about it. Have you ever tried the GPB conditioner?
Thanks Mande! I love WC and HSR. I use GPB for my protein and like it. I don’t use protein often but when I do, I reach for GPB, Ion Effective Care (red label) or Joico K-Pack Reconstructor.
Love this! I use more than any coin-size amount of moisturizer because as I’ve gotten to “know” my hair, I’ve realized it really needs it! It’s really, really about doing what’s best for your own hair.
Thank you much! I’m so glad I learned to listen to my hair. What a difference that made.
