Yesterday was my one year natural hair anniversary!!! I can recall my big chop like yesterday. We had just returned home from a long and grueling medical trip. I looked in the mirror and simply could not continue my transition. I had no time or energy. Snip, snip, snip the scissors went and the rest is history. This post provides an overview of my current natural hair regimen and product favorites.
Natural Hair Pictures – Getting To Know My Curls
I was unable to blog consistently over the past year so below are photos when I was getting to know my curls.
This was an awkward stage because my hair wasn’t shaped and my curls were not defined.
To achieve this look, I simply combed out my hair and this is what I was left with. Loved it!
I twisted my hair up in chunky twists and this is was the result.
Natural Hair Regimen
My ability to thoroughly complete my natural hair regimen has been lacking. Neglect is an understatement when describing my hair care. I’m consumed by life and hair is an afterthought. When time is available, my natural hair regimen includes the following: pre-shampoo treatment, shampoo and deep condition. My hairstyle of choice has been wash and go.
With time being so limited, I’ve been sticking to what works. My current favorites are:
- Pre-Shampoo Treatment
- Komaza Hair Care Pona Hair and Scalp Treatment – for follicle and scalp health
- Shampoo (Sulfate)
- Nexxus Therappe – cleanses without stripping
- Shampoo (Sulfate-Free)
- Camille Rose Naturals Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse – cleanses without causing buildup
- Deep Conditioner
- Nexxus Humectress – consistently hydrating
- Hair Detangler
- Paul Mitchell The Detangler – outstanding slip for shower detangling
- Leave In Conditioner
- Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk – moisturizing
- Hair Styling Gel
- Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker – soft, defined wash and go curls
- Curl Definer & Hair Butter
One Year Anniversary
My last hair cut was February 2017 so I was overdue. Therefore, I booked an appointment with the same hairstylist I used previously for a wash and cut. She cuts my hair curly because I want an aesthetically pleasing look while wearing my hair curly.
Pre-Hair Cut Pictures
Despite the neglect, my hair grew really between February and August.
My Hair Cut
I felt too much hair was removed but I was assured that wasn’t the case. She showed me some worn ends in a few sections to offer reassurance. I’ve been fairly consistent with moisturizing and sealing although I haven’t been consistent with washing my hair. Stress and neglect probably played a part. Even with that, the stylist assured retention was great.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of the finished work. My husband has been hospitalized for two months and counting and I needed to get back to the hospital to relieve the sitter. She put my hair in two flat twists and out the door I went.
My hair looks choppy and layered. Hopefully the shape comes together after washing my hair, whenever that may be. I prefer to wash my hair at home but we live an hour away from the hospital. I haven’t had the chance to make it home just yet but when I do, washing my hair is one of the first things I’ll do.
