What is Birchbox?
Acure Organics Stem Cell Shampoo ($9.99 / 8 oz.): If you want an ingredient list that’s as squeaky-clean as your hair, look no further than this shampoo from Acure Organics. Now to plant the proverbial seed. The natural beauty pros behind the brand have ditched a long list of dirty ingredients (think sulfates, parabens, and gluten). In exchange for these harsh additives, you’ll find nourishing oils plus active plant stem cells that renew and revitalize strands at the cellular level. Not only is it nice to your hair, it’s cruelty-free and vegan too!
For fine to normal hair that craves volume, choose Pure Mint + Echinacea, which relies on quinoa protein for strength and body and babassu oil for moisture. Echinacea stem cells promote regeneration at the root. For dry, damaged hair, Moroccan argan oil provides thirst-quenching moisture and omega fatty acids for shine and hair health. Gentle enough for everyday use, Lemongrass + Argan Oil clarifies all hair types for strands that are shiny and healthy. These shampoos are all safe for color-treated hair.
Acure Organics Stem Cell Conditioner ($9.99 / 8 oz.): High turnover may be bad for business, but it’s great for your hair. This creamy conditioner works to increase cell turnover on your scalp, resulting in healthier, glossier strands in the short- and long-term. And the magic is totally natural: Active plant stem cells team up with megavitamins and nourishing argan oil to provide long-lasting moisture, strength, and shine.
Lemongrass + Argan is a lush daily conditioner suitable for all hair types, packed with stem cell cultures and antioxidant CoQ10 for superior hair health. For dry, damaged, or curly hair, try Moroccan argan oil—its Triple Moisture System (argan oil, antioxidant CoQ10, and sea buckthorn oil) restores hydration and shine while strengthening hair follicles. If your hair is fine or limp, Pure Mint + Echinacea is your bag. Quinoa proteins strengthen hair while natural oils provide lightweight moisture. All conditioners are vegan and safe for color-treated hair—not to mention free of sulfates, parabens, gluten, and phthalates. What more could we ask for?
Assessment: The product hype sounds divine BUT you already know I frantically run in the opposite direction at the mere thought of protein touching my hair. I’ll patch test the shampoo and conditioner on a day when I’m feeling kind of froggy and simply have nothing but time and opportunity on my hands. That way, if my hair freaks out, I’ll have time to get it back in check.
FusionBeauty LashFusion XL ($24.00): The creamy formula glides on easily, and it’s full of nutrients to promote thicker, less brittle lashes. The oversized wand is designed to help you thoroughly coat each lash. This jet black mascara doesn’t just add fullness to your lashes—the nourishing formula helps them grow stronger over time. Ingredients like avocado oil, wheat flower lipids, and keratin proteins are gradually released, conditioning your lashes even after you wash off your mascara.
Assessment: I’m no makeup pro but did give this a test drive. It performed liked any other mascara. Nothing magical. Do factor that I can take it or leave it (mostly leave it) when it comes to makeup — it’s just not my thing. Never have and likely never will. Therefore, I can get by with any cheapie mascara and be a-ok for the few times a year that I have a beat face.
Antica Farmacista Hand Cream ($18.00): Nourishing ingredients like shea butter, vitamin E, and almond oil soothe and hydrate for instant relief. Ala Moana is an intoxicating floral with jasmine and gardenia, plus lush green notes. Coriander, Lotus & Cucumber has a fresh, green scent, with spicy notes of coriander. Bergamot & Ocean Aria features saltwater, jasmine, and lavender with crisp bergamot and white musk. Grapefruit is clean, fresh, and invigorating. For a twist on citrus with notes of lemon, white florals, and cedarwood, choose Lemon, Verbena & Cedar. Prosecco features top notes of citrus with apricot, passionfruit, and sugared black currant. Orange Blossom, Lilac & Jasmine is bright and floral with subtle hints of vanilla musk.
Assessment: This moisturizer is very perfumey. I’m actually ok with perfumey so long as it smells good — fresh and light. I was really hoping for a musk scented moisturizer because I love all things musk (well, almost all things musk). However, the jasmine and gardenia notes overpower all. I’m not a fan of the smell although my hands felt silky.
Chuao Chocolatier Chocolate Bars: Chuao’s unconventional chocolate bars come in a spectrum of flavors. There’s Spicy Maya, dark chocolate infused with pasilla chile, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon; Firecracker, dark chocolate filled with popping candy and a touch of chipotle; and Salted Chocolate Crunch, which has sea salt and toasted breadcrumbs. Adventurous foodies love Maple Bacon Bar, a mouthwatering mix of milk chocolate and bacon drizzled in maple, and Honeycomb, a decadent dark bar with crunchy, caramelized honey. For nut lovers, there’s the Ravishing Rocky Road Bar, which features salted caramelized almonds and fluffy marshmallows in a bed of milk.
Assessment: I’m not a fan of chocolate but opted to sample this anyway. #fail First off, it’s chocolate on the outside and popcorn on the inside. That’s just awkward.com to me. I wasn’t sure what to expect so when I bit into it, I thought…this isn’t bad. That is, until the popcorn started popping in my mouth like the old school candy pop rocks — remember those? It was just a weird experience (for me). However, if you love chocolate covered popcorn, I see no reason why you wouldn’t like or love this treat. SN: The hubs love chocolate and popcorn separately. He wasn’t quite sure if he’d like chocolate covered popcorn but found the treat rather tasty.
Birchbox gives a freebie item each month in each box. I received the Birchbox Goes Mobile screen cleaner as my freeb. My phone stays oily — I love moisturized hands, what can I say. Therefore, the screen cleaner will definitely come in handy!
