I rarely get involved in natural hair vs. relaxed hair discussions because it’s just not that serious to me. I truly celebrate all healthy hair choices be it natural, transitioning or relaxed.
For Naturals Only
From time to time, small things irk me deeply and get up under my skin. Example: I was on social media and took notice of a healthy hair casting call. I reached out to the host because I wanted to share my story and be an inspiration to others. Yeah well, I was rejected citing it was restricted to naturals only. But why? Do we really believe that healthy hair is only packaged one way?
Natural Hair vs. Relaxed Hair
I’ve done my fair share of eyeing hair on the street and web surfing blogs, forums and social media to find jacked up hair comes in all shapes and sizes, not just relaxed hair. Why have we become so blinded by the natural movement that we now feel no other hair choice is healthy? Isn’t hair as healthy or unhealthy as you treat it? I totally get that anything in its natural form is the purest but does that necessarily mean it’s the healthiest?
I’m totally grateful for all of you that swing by my blog and believe in me, my thoughts and my hair, even though I am relaxed. Please know I’m definitely not trying to stir up mess. If you’ve followed my blog for any length of time, you know that’s not who I am. I’m simply over here scratching my head on why we’ve adopted such strict beliefs. I truly don’t understand why this line has divided us. I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts (natural or relaxed).
Edited to Add [1 June 16]: Although I’m now transitioning to natural hair, my views on this topic remain the same. And, I’m still just as fired up about this now as I was then. The divide between relaxed hair and natural hair is truly ridiculous.
