Today’s feature is with ElegantPearl and she has fine 4b/4c relaxed hair.
When and why did you start your healthy hair journey?
I have been relaxed since I was about 8 or 9. I started my hair journey when I was introduced to the Long Hair Care Forum in March of 2010. I was looking for some resources on how to keep my hair healthy. I had recently moved to another state and could not find a healthy hair stylist in my new area. I was accustomed to going to the salon every other week to maintain my hair and had not actually washed my own hair for about 7 years…lol Once I moved, I had a rude awakening that I had to wash and set my hair myself, but with practice, hair education, and patience, I have learned to properly take care of my own hair even though I do go to the salon for relaxer touch-ups.
What is your current length and goal length?
My current length is APL. My goal length was BSL. I reached this goal earlier this year, but decided to trim my hair back to APL so that I could manage it better and get some layers. One day I may decide to grow it out again, but for now I’m really loving my hair at APL.
What is your regimen – wash day, daily, nightly?
I keep my regimen pretty simple. With my fine strands I have to be careful about over manipulation. I have found that washing, DCing, and roller setting ONCE a week works for me. I prefer not to use direct heat, but if it’s a special occasion, I will visit the salon for a flat ironed look. My regimen is pretty simple, I do not moisturize and seal, over manipulate, or use protein treatments on my hair. I wear a silk scarf or satin bonnet to sleep in and try to keep the comb and brushing down to a minimum.
My go to washing products are (listed in the order they used):
Avalon Kera Care 1st Lather Shampoo
Avalon Kera Care Hydrating Detangling Shampoo
Avalon Kera Care Humecto Creme Conditioner
I use Mizani Hair Milk and my leave in conditioner and Kera Care Wrap Foam Lotion to roller-set. For my roller set, i prefer green rollers for a nice bouncy set.
I also use Mizani Rose H2O Conditioning Hairdress with a bit of Josie Maran Argan Oil if my hair is feeling a bit dry and Curls Passion Fruit curl control paste to tame fly aways.
How often do you touch-up / trim / use heat on your relaxed hair?
I relax every 8-10 weeks and get trimmed every time I get a touch-up. I used to stretch my relaxers 10-12 weeks, but I found that my hair just does not like it. I had too much shedding and breakage when I did it this way. I try to stay away from direct heat as much as possible, but I use my Pibbs dryer for my weekly rollersets. I will get my hair flat ironed for special occasions or to change up my look.
What’s your fave go-to style?
My favorite style is a roller set look. If I do not have time to roller set, I will protective style by bunning my hair. I do an occasional braid out if I get lazy, but I stay away from direct heat as much as possible.
What do you love most and least about your hair?
I love that my hair is not fussy. It requires the bare minimum for me to see great results. What I like least is that my hair is porous on occasion and tends to frizz up when I don’t get proper moisture. As it gets closer to relaxer time, my hair tends to shed.
Do you take any supplements or use growth-aides? How have they helped?
Yes, I take several supplements: Garlic, GNC Hair vitamins, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin B-12, and Milk Thistle. These supplements help my growth by adding to the nutrients my body receives. In addition, I try to drink at least 90-100 ounces a water a day and I have really seen results my drinking a daily green smoothie.
What has helped you most in achieving and maintaining length?
What has helped me most is just being patient and listening to my hair. Also sprucing up my diet with daily green smoothies has given me fantastic growth even though I’m keeping it trimmed at APL. I also think staying away from the direct heat helps me tremendously.
Name a hair product, accessory or tool you cannot be without?
And why? I cannot live without my Kera Care Humecto Conditioner. This is my HG DC! #enoughsaid
