I originally wrote this roller setting relaxed hair article many years ago while blogging on hair forums before starting my blog so I don’t have many (good) photos to share.
Roller setting relaxed hair can be so rewarding but it is very time consuming. Here I share a quick and easy way to speed up the process with similar results with using the ponytail roller setting method.
Products I used for Roller Setting Relaxed Hair
I have an Amazon Affiliate Store established with the below products listed for your browsing pleasure. >>Relaxed Thairapy Amazon Store<<
After washing and conditioning my hair, I used the following leave-in products.
KeraCare Foam Wrap
Pureology Instant Repair Leave In
Alfaparf Semi Di Lino
When roller setting relaxed hair, you really have to be careful what products you use and how much. I like my roller sets shiny and bouncy not dull and stuff. It took a very long while to find the right product combination but these products offer my hair the best result with shiny, bouncy hair.
Roller Setting Relaxed Hair
Roller Setting Time: 30 minutes
Drying Time: 1 hour
When I first started roller setting my hair, I used small rubber bands to secure each section of hair. While that worked well for the most part, there were times when the rubber bands would cause breakage upon removal. I now use Goody Ouchless Hair Ties because they are easy to remove and does not cause hair breakage.
I apply product to mid lengths and ends only. I do not use product on the roots. Through much research and experimenting, I observed adding product to the roots make them feel dry and appear dull. Trust me, I wouldn’t have believed it had I not tried it for myself. Sure enough though, not applying product to the roots made a huge difference in how my hair felt and performed.
In addition, the root area takes a very long time to dry because it’s gathered inside the pony and adding product just prolongs drying time. Some opt against product on the roots if they are planning to flat iron. I personally don’t flat iron my roots.
Ponytail Roller Setting Relaxed Hair
My hair is set in 7 ponies using 2 rollers per pony for a total of 14 rollers.
3 ponies down the center forming a Mohawk. 1 ponytail in left front quadrant. 1 ponytail in back left quadrant. 1 ponytail in right front quadrant. 1 pony in back right quadrant.
The result of my ponytail roller setting relaxed hair method is shiny, bouncy hair each and every time! The ponytail method is so much easier and faster than traditional roller setting. I find this method is much healthier for my hair even as traditional roller setting is a lot of manipulation which can lead to slight breakage. Breakage is not an issue when ponytail roller setting my hair.
