If you’re anything like me, I toss money at hair products without hesitation but when it comes to things like hair scissors, I’m not as generous. For the longest, I’ve used Beauty Supply Store scissors that cost around $10. These scissors include a cheap plastic handle with a reasonably sharp metal blade. Despite the handle feeling cheaply made, I use to think these scissors were decent quality because of the sharpness of the blade. That is, until I purchased salon grade quality scissors for trimming hair.
Use Scissors for Trimming Hair Only
No matter what scissors you own, you should only use them for trimming and cutting your hair. If you use them to cut other things around the house, the blades will get dull and worn out. Using dull and low quality scissors will cause your hair to fray, rip and tear and cause split ends.
How to Buy Quality Scissors
I was not familiar with how to buy hair scissors so I took to Google for tips, asked sales associates and even asked a few hair stylists. There’s really no equation for success. It’s about what feels good in your hands with regards to length and weight. I visited Sally Beauty Supply and held a number of scissors and finally decided on FROMM 5 ¾” Horizon Shears. I was drawn to them because they felt sturdy, are Japanese steel (a good quality material), lightweight and fit my fingers and hands comfortably.
Scissors vs. Shears, What’s the Difference
When I first researched scissors vs. shears, many said it was semantics. After conducting additional research, there is a difference. Hair scissors offer a blunt cut and hair shears offer a sharper, more precise cut. Hair shears are what salons and hair stylists use. My FROMM scissors are hair shears.
Salon Grade vs. Beauty Supply Store Scissors
My salon grade scissors are extremely sharp and precise. Like seriously, they are like a hot knife cutting through butter. There is no drag when the scissors meet to cut my hair. My hair is cut neatly and precisely. The beauty supply store scissors were good but salon grade scissors are definitely great. My hair has a more precise cut and I’ve noticed less recurrence of split ends since using salon grade scissors. If you have not invested in a good pair of scissors for trimming hair, now is the time!
