Today’s topic discusses how to stop relaxed hair from breaking throughout the week and during relaxer stretches.
A Lovely Reader Writes…
I saw your feature on a relaxed hair blog and notice you mentioned that you comb your hair everyday. Well I wanted to know how do you prevent breakage when combing through your hair when you air dry that week, especially when your a few weeks post? I ask because my last visit with my hair dresser she mentioned that I can’t treat my hair like when I was natural I have to comb through my hair everyday to remove shed hairs and to combat this bad detangling sessions on wash day. I’m wondering how will that work when I air dry? My hair still has lots of texture to it when I air dry. Any help you can give me will be appreciated!
I have tangle prone hair. Therefore, combing it once daily keeps it free from tangles and knots. Knowing your hair is key to stopping it from breaking. For example, my hair breaks more when combing it while saturated with product. Therefore, allowing product to fully absorb into my hair before combing is just one method used to keep hair breakage to a minimum.
My moisturizing and sealing routine includes moisturizing with a water based product and sealing with an oil based product. I give the product about 5 minutes to absorb into my hair before combing in small sections with my seamless comb.
Seamless Combs Helps
Seamless combs are combs without raised or ridged seams. Therefore, it passes along the hair with less friction than traditional combs.
Moisturizing / Sealing Keeps Hair Supple
Moisturizing and sealing is important to keeping your hair hydrated and protected from the drying effects of the environment. Hair that is moisturized and properly hydrated has more elasticity than dry hair, thus it breaks way less. Therefore, you must keep your hair hydrated to stop relaxed hair from breaking off.
Use a Detangling Spray
Detangling sprays provide the hair with elasticity and slip which helps the comb glide through your hair with ease. This step alone can help you tremendously to stop relaxed hair from breaking off.
Stop Relaxed Hair from Breaking While Stretching Relaxer
I never comb through my new growth without it being saturated in oil or a detangling spray. In addition, I finger detangle it first to ensure I remove as much shed hair and tangles as I possibly can before allowing a comb to pass through it.
Use Protein As Needed
Protein treatments provide the hair with strength and moisture based products like moisturizers and deep conditioners provide the hair with hydration. The goal is to keep the two evenly balanced by using a blend of protein and moisture based products in your hair regimen. When hair is properly balanced, you’ll notice less breakage, even when combing your hair throughout the week.
