My #TalkItTuesday Question
As I look around at all the beautiful relaxed hair and natural hair ladies that are say mid back length and longer, many of them do not wash weekly. In fact, many of them only wash once or twice a month.
I’m at a point where I am no longer washing weekly and all seems to be going good. I average washing every two to three weeks. Komaza Hair Care believes an unclean scalp is worse than the manipulation of washing weekly. I’m not sure I agree judging how my hair is thriving. Other long haired ladies seem to be doing just fine also. I just read an article written by Cassandre Beccai where she states she washes every two to three weeks and we know her hair is long and gorgeous. What are your thoughts?
Do split ends actually travel up the entire strand if not cut?
Great question! I invited a stylist to join us for the tougher questions so hopefully she swings by and add her perspective.
I asked two hair stylists this very question last year and was told, they won’t travel. However, I just don’t know I am totally sold.
I have had tons of splits and know the frayed ends will chip and micro tear if over manipulated. So, to me, they can travel a little. I have never seen my splits shred my entire strand by traveling all the way up to the root how we’re led to believe.
I say they will travel if the problem does not get taken cared of immediately. A protein treatment that helps the hair fibers bond together is necessary. I think constant washing with shampoo or baking soda can make the problem worse. I am not an expert, but it makes sense.

Great input, Nerline. Let’s not forget, constant combing. All of those things can further complicate the issue. In my experience, removing the splits were the best course of action. It removed the problem and gave me peace of mind that it was not traveling further up the strand.
I definitely agree that splits can travel up the hair shaft if not taken care of asap. I’m also not an expert, but if you have splits, I think constant manipulation may worsen it. If the damage isn’t to bad, I think as Nerliine stated, a protein treatment would help and even protective styling to reduce manipulation. Maybe wear your hair in protective styles until your hair is at a length where you are ready to cut.
Woot!! Excellent thoughts.
Sorry about the autocorrect mistakes.
My hair has been shedding constantly for over a year. What can the problem be? I wash and deep condition every other week; I moisturize and seal every other day. Thank you.
My hair tends to shed a lot if I use a product that it does not like. If you are using the same products you were using before the shedding started, it could be a medical problem. Biotin and iron deficiencies make my hair shed too. A regular coffee rinse can help with the problem, but the acidity in the coffee tends to close the cuticles in my case. If you have low porosity hair, I suggest you find a different alternative, like massaging your scalp with peppermint or tea tree oil mixed with your favorite carrier oil.

Hi 5! Love those tips.
Hi There! Sorry to hear about your shedding. Is it normal shedding or excessive shedding? Our hair can shed up to about 100 strands per day. And just to make sure, you are seeing white bulbs at the end, right?
If your hair is shedding excessively then you should see a dr to make sure you’re not dealing with anything other than shedding hair. Excessive shedding could be a scalp issue or internal issue.
Have you tried shedding remedies like black coffee or black tea rinses? My favorite of all time for shedding is Alter Ego Garlic Conditioner. It’s pricey but worth it. I purchase mine from Amazon.
Did you recently have baby? As Jay said we can lose up to 100 hairs a day.

I have been salon relaxed all my life my hair has always been thick. Since I started my hair journey and moved away from my stylist, I want to consider self relaxing. My question is should I continue searching for a stylist or try box relaxers and why? Also anyone have any review for crochet Senegalese twist?
I will see what I can find on Senegalese twist.
I have been salon relaxed turned self relaxed back to salon relaxed. I self relaxed when I moved to a new area but my preference has always been salon relaxed to minimize the potential for overlapping and over processing.
Box relaxers aren’t nearly as strong as professional relaxers so they are more forgiving when it comes to over processing. I’m sure over processing is possible with any relaxer but it won’t happen as fast with box relaxers. With a professional relaxer, you really need to know what you’re doing.
Many have moved away from using stylists because they want to be in control of their outcome. Do you trust your self relaxing skill to avoid overlapping and do you trust you can get through your hair quick enough to avoid over processing. Many practice with applying conditioner to get their technique and timing down.
I always used box relaxers when I self relaxed. I was texlaxed more than anything because box never could get my hair bone straight but I was ok with that.
Hey Kia! I agree with a lot of what Jay mentioned. This would really be a personal preference based on your comfort level of handling your own hair. There are many good stylists out there. But if you do decide to self relax, I would definitely suggest checking a few blogs or youtube tutorials to study and form your own process. I used the half-and-half process when I self relaxed (relaxing one half, rinsing, neutralizing, etc., then relax the other half). I started self relaxing because I had so many of my own bad experiences with stylists after moving away to college. I had been to several different salons and the state of my hair never seemed to get better. I always ended up having to cut it due to overprocessing which I later came to realize once I started my HHJ. I finally decided to take things into my own hands, and read several blogs and tutorials to prepare myself. It is a lot easier and sometimes safer to have your hair chemically relaxed by a trained professional as long as they are handling your hair properly, but it’s definitely not impossible to do it on your own if you’re unable to find a stylist that you can trust! 🙂

I too used to go to the salon for my relaxers but being on a hhj, the practices in salons can make you cringe sometimes, which is why ppl tend to end up self relaxing. Do your research first because you don’t want to end up haviing to do corrective relaxers alll the time.
