Last Week’s #TalkItTuesday with Jay Recap!
Last week we had an awesome discussion on split ends. Specifically, can split ends travel up the strand? We had several hair experts chime in and share their views…
I certainly believe split ends can cause major issue if not resolved. They are like dead weight as they hang around and erode the ends of your lovely hair for no good reason. I know many of us prefer to hold on to the length as much as possible but I recommend removing them with some good shears, a split-ender (DIY trimming tool) or simply go to a salon! Either way, remove the dead weight and moving forward with a healthy head of hair.
Another great question pertained to shedding — what can be the cause of non-stop shedding. This is a question that I’m asked a lot. Shedding is normal although we are often led to believe otherwise. We can lose up to 100 strands per day as I and Tomi of Tomes Edition pointed out. Excessive shedding is not normal, however.
Assuming there are no medical issues, tea rinsing and coffee rinsing are excellent methods for combatting shedding? The two downsides from my experience is it takes a few uses before results can be seen and it’s a bit of trial and error to figure out what tea or coffee your hair likes best. My hair dislikes coffee rinsing with a passion so I’d prefer tea rinsing over coffee rinsing any day. Therefore, I did a complete series on the benefits of tea rinsing so check it out to learn more!
But wait, before we move on to the next topic, my ultimate favorite product for combatting shedding is Alter Ego Garlic Mask Conditioner. I have used it for years and keep a jar on hand at all times. Because it’s so pricey, I only pull it out when I feel it’s necessary!
As of late, I’ve had great success with using Komaza Bountiful Mane and Komaza Pona Hair and Scalp so I haven’t had a need to tea rinse or use Alter Ego Garlic Mask Conditioner. I believe scalp health is an important aspect to keeping shed hair to a norm and the Komaza products do just that.
Self Relaxing vs. Salon Relaxing
The awesome discussion about self relaxing and salon relaxing was brought up by Kia of Glam Her.
Having been salon relaxed for most of my life, I understand the tug of war associated with do I self relax and what brand of relaxer should I use — box relaxer or professional grade relaxer and why? The answer to this question is, it depends. It really depends on the level of skill of the person and what strength of relaxer the hair can withstand.
Box Relaxers vs. Professional Grade Relaxers
Box relaxers are milder and more forgiving than professional grade relaxers. Therefore, the opportunity for over processing of the hair is less but still likely nonetheless. Professional grade relaxers will get the hair straighter but you better know what you are doing or you might find yourself dealing with scalp burns and over processed hair.
Along comes the question of should I just continue frequenting the salon and allowing my stylist to handle my hair care needs. For many, the no brainer answer is become a DIYer. For me, however, it’s not that simple. I like considering all options. I know hairstylists don’t have the best reputation in the online community but I truly believe some great stylists are still out there — Reniece & Company is one of them!
I have self relaxed my hair at various points without issue. However, before opting to become a self relaxer, once should consider if they have the ability to properly apply the relaxer without overlapping and over processing the hair. Most of us go about self relaxing very cautiously so then there is the issue of under processing. I can’t tell you how many ladies I’ve seen and heard complain about under processing. Having inconsistent textures can cause just as much damage (translation, breakage) as over processing. Don’t forget to Check out 6 Causes of Hair Breakage to Avoid.
