Several readers have asked how to deal with knots and tangles. No matter if relaxed or natural, this is a problem we all face. This can especially become an issue for relaxer stretchers. When I first started blogging, you may recall my constant battle with knots and tangles (the featured photo is a throwback and photo proof). I was on the hunt for that perfect product, perfect combination. I eventually realized, it wasn’t product, it was technique. I now follow the below routine which has made a tremendous difference:

Don’t get me started on tangles and knots. I once spent 14 hours detangling after using a shampoo that didn’t agree with my new growth and texlaxed hair. Towards the end I was so tired I wanted to cry. Meshing is an understatement; more like glued. This was early in my hair journey. I said never again. When your wash day post came in I spent ages analysing it and tweaked my regimen to eliminate pitfalls. I’ve had to change my products as well because as my hair got healthier it got more difficult to deal with. But it’s so worth it. My husband is surprised he can never catch me marathon detangling anymore.
Hi Aine, I’m so glad your detangling issues have vanished as well. I no longer dread wash day. My husband also noticed I’m not struggling with that aspect of my hair. I do get some knotty tangles when stretching but nothing like before.
I tried the 2/3 comb chase method a couple of times before I realized that my fingers totally do the same job with a lot less breakage and its definitely faster.
Pre-wash detangling is a MUST!!!
Thanks for sharing!

Fangaz do a great job but my hair works so much better with a comb. I’m sure in the long run, I will end up with more splits because I use a comb but in the short run, it feels right. Why must this be such a balancing act.
I also struggled with tangles at the early stages of my hair journey. I don’t any more because I have learned the technique of prepoo, detanging before washing, washing my hair in braids, and being gentle while shampooing. 🙂
That helps tremendously.
Great post I actually follow all these steps
Cool!
I’m learning a lot just started my hair journey. Thanks☺️
Congrats! You’ll be a pro in no time.
