WEN by Chaz Dean is the trending thing right now. I’m sure you have seen the many infomercials. It is said to work on all hair types and textures because it formulated to condition while cleansing unlike many shampoos. I am a hard sale and have an even harder time trusting infomercials. They just seem so fake! After much research, I eventually purchased a small 6 oz. bottle from Amazon after seeing many positive reviews about WEN Fig on African American Hair.
— WEN FIG Product Promises —
WEN Fig is a detergent free cleansing conditioner that replaces the need for shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, detangler, leave-in conditioner, and even shaving cream.
WEN Fig contains sweet almond mint, lavender, fig, pomegranate and tea tree oil. These ingredients are universal and formulated for all hair types and textures. Together, they create volume, moisturize, hydrate and replenish hair without weighing it down.
— WEN FIG Review on African American Hair —
My going in position was hesitation because WEN Fig contains hydrolyzed wheat protein. I know from experience hydrolyzed wheat protein has a strengthening effect on my hair and can make my hair feel coarse and dry. My hair feels much like protein overload when using hydrolyzed wheat protein. Since I consider my hair protein sensitive, I am very cautious with using protein and protein-like products. However, I am willing to give WEN Fig a try anyway.
— Using WEN Fig —
I didn’t pre-poo or dry deep condition leading to this wash day because I wanted to see what WEN Fig would do on its own. The current state of my new growth is dry and thick and I can barely run my fingers through it without getting stuck in what feels like a wooded forest.
I rinsed my hair thoroughly (roughly 5 minutes) and applied WEN Fig. I did not count the number of pumps used. I just pumped and applied WEN Fig until I felt enough was applied.
I massaged WEN Fig onto my scalp and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing. The reviews were true, “my tangles just melted” as everyone suggested it would. My hair felt clean but not stripped. I always follow cleansing conditioners with either a deep conditioning session or rinse out conditioner. I used Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose for 5 minutes and rinsed with cool water. I applied my leave in products with using the L.O.C. (liquid / oil / conditioner) method and air dried with banding my hair.
— Final Thoughts —
I was very pleased with my experience. Well, at first anyway. My hair would eventually appear dull and lack sheen which is standard for how my hair responds to hydrolyzed wheat protein.
WEN Fig definitely delivers as promised – detangling was a breeze, my hair was soft, felt clean but not stripped. I highly recommend WEN Fig if your hair does not have issue with hydrolyzed wheat protein. As for me, I will discontinue use since my hair has a hit or miss relationship with products containing hydrolyzed wheat protein.
