Kinky, curly hair is fragile and can become outrageously tangled. When it comes to detangling combs, I can’t use just any comb for my type 4 hair. This post highlights my experience with using a wooden wide tooth detangling comb.

Extra Wide vs. Wide Tooth Detangling Comb
Extra wide and wide tooth detangling combs tend to get lumped into one category. However, there is a significant difference of the effectiveness of an extra wide and wide tooth detangling comb on my hair.
My hair has a tighter curl pattern in the front although you can’t see that in the photo. Therefore, I use an extra wide tooth detangling comb as my first pass comb to remove shed hair. Often times, these combs leave knots and tangles behind because the tines are so far apart. Therefore, I follow-up with a wide tooth detangling comb as a second pass comb to properly detangle my hair to remove knots and tangles.
Wooden Combs and Brushes
Natural Curls Club offers two detangling combs: Curl Detangler Signature* and Extra Wide Detangling Comb. At first glance, the combs look similar but there are differences.
Per Natural Curls Club, the new comb (Curl Detangler Signature) is a “pro line which cuts detangling time even more. It is used by professional stylists looking for performance. It replaces the need for two combs as well as it is a rat tail and comb in one — the top tooth is pointed so you can part with it. The comb is also bigger 8″x2.125″ vs 7.25″x2.125″and sports a new fat handle for a better ergonomic grip.” Natural Curls Club describe these combs as extra wide detangling combs. However, I consider them both wide tooth detangling combs when comparing them against my first pass comb.

My Experience
I used both wooden combs as my first pass comb to see if they worked. The Curl Detangler Signature outperforms the Hair Rescue comb. It glides through my hair easier and I can work in larger sections. However, the Curl Detangler Signature glides through my hair quicker as a second pass comb. I find myself working slower, in smaller sections and being more cautious when using it as a first pass comb. The Curl Detangler Signature significantly reduces breakage and lessens single strand knots. In addition, my hairstyles have a neater, smoother appearance. When done, my hair is properly detangled and feels smooth.
Hair Tips:
Smooth hair along the shaft is an indicator that hair is properly detangled.
Rough feeling hair along the shaft is a sign that shed hair and tangles were not addressed.
Rough feeling hair on the ends is an indicator that a trim is due.
Everything purchased from Natural Curls Club has been superior. No rough edges or splinters in the wooden products. Great customer service. Fast shipping. Excellent warranty. I recommended the Curl Signature Comb to another natural and she also loved it.
